AERO Scholarships and Grants
A $1000 merit award recognizing an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student
DESCRIPTION: This scholarship is for a student in rehabilitation or education who is majoring in rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation teaching, orientation and mobility, or education of students with visual disabilities. Applicants must be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university. Undergraduate applicants must be of at least Junior standing. All applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 in the major field of study. Applicants must be residents of the State of Ohio but need not be enrolled in a program within Ohio . A student may receive this Personnel Preparation Scholarship only one time.
SELECTION: Selection is based on the evaluation of the materials submitted for examination by the AERO Awards Committee appointed by the AERO Board.
TO APPLY: Submit the following information with your completed Application Form to John Rempel at the address shown below:
- Most recent transcript(s)
- Letter from your institution indicating your admission in good standing into an undergraduate or graduate program in the field of visual impairment (rehabilitation, orientation and mobility, or education)
- Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from someone not related to your college/university
- A short description of volunteer or paid involvement with individuals with visual disabilities or any other disability. Include any activities from high school days until the present. Experiences may involve such work as a reader, teacher’s aide, camp counselor, or member of a consumer or professional organization concerned with individuals with disabilities and/or their families.
- A short essay explaining why you have chosen your specific field as your profession and what you would like to contribute to the field.

What is this scholarship?
This is a $500 scholarship for qualified visually impaired students who wish to better themselves by enrolling in academic, vocational, or technical training programs at the post-secondary level.
Who is eligible?
- Must be an Ohio resident (1 full year prior to application)
- Must be "Visually Impaired" (legal definition)
- Must complete application and the required supporting documents
- Former recipients are NOT eligible, however applicants may apply more than Once.

PURPOSE:
- To provide up to six $250 grants for AERO members currently involved in the education of blind or visually impaired persons.
- For professional development through traveling away from his/her home environment to expand his/her knowledge; for research relevant to his/her job; or to make or purchase materials to use with students or clients; or
- to develop materials to be used in service provision
APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Shall be actively engaged in the education or rehabilitation of blind or visually impaired persons.
- Shall be a member in good standing of AERO.
- Shall not be awarded a grant more frequently than once every three years.
- Write an article for the newsletter following your travel, research or projects so you can share your knowledge with AERO Members; or prepare a presentation at the following AERO Conference.
- You must also submit receipts showing how the money was spent.
APPLICATIONS PROCEDURE
Applications shall be in the form of a letter or request to the AERO Board and shall include:
- Name, address and phone number
- AER member number
- What you plan to attend; what research you will pursue; or what materials you plan to purchase.
- How you think you will benefit from this experience.
- Provide a summary of the costs involved.
- Describe how you plan to share this experience with other AERO members (such as submitting an article to the newsletter or presenting at an AERO Conference).
Applications will be considered quarterly at regularly scheduled business meetings. The AERO board typically meets the first or second Thursday of the following months: February, April, June, August, and October. The decision of the committee is final. Under no circumstances is an applicant to contact the Board requesting justification of their decision.
Award of this grant is contingent upon conference profits.

Pennsylvania College of Optometry announces scholarships and stipends available beginning with this summer through a five year grant from Rehabilitation Services Administration for students enrolled in Masters and Certificate Programs in Rehabilitation Teaching and Orientation and Mobility.
